Our 2nd Earthquake

August 11, 2009

We were woken at about 5am with the house shaking. Surprisingly Dawson and Abigail did not wake up. This time the earthquake was closer but it was not as big over all a 6.6. Here it registered at a 4 only because it was closer than the last one.

Our 1st Earthquake

August 9, 2009

We were at the Mikoshi Summer Festival and the ground started to shake. The announcer at the festival came over the intercom to let us know that it was an earthquake. The actual earthquake took place out to sea. It registered a 3 here where we live and 6.9 where it occurred. Here is a link to check out the earthquake. We live in the Kanagawa, Honmoku-Wada area.

Mikoshi Summer Festival

August 7-9, 2009

After Abigail’s party we went to the park close to our house for the Summer Festival.

The Festival is held every summer and the residence of our neighborhood bring a protable Mikoshi Shrine to the elderly so they can worship.
On Friday night the Mikoshi Shrine is taken to the local shrine in the park to receive the god.

On Saturday the shrine was taken to one side of the park neighborhood and Sunday the other side. There is a small shrine that is pulled by the children.
David and Dawson participated. David was only able to carry for a few roads because of his knee. Dawson pulled the little one for a short distance. He wanted to walk with Abby and Momma.
It was an interesting experience.

Abigail's 1st Birthday

August 4, 2009

Today is Abigail’s 1st Birthday. It was a pretty day. Dawson went to school and Abby and I spent the day together. We are having a small party for her on Friday. I have invited some of Dawson’s classmates and their siblings. I am going to make her a small cake and a larger one for everyone else (Traditional US custom). As far as I can tell the US is the only county that gives the child their own cake to eat.

Friday August 7

Abby's party

I made her cakes and I am proud of myself. They turned out pretty good. Abby did not know what to think about all the kids at the house. We did snacks, gifts and then cake. Abby did not know what to do with her cake. She sat there for a few minutes looking around. Then, she leaned over and took a bite. She never stuck her hands in the cake but she liked eating the icing. It was so cute. Unfortunately we did not get video but we did take pictures. All the children helped open the gifts that they brought. It was so funny. Abby was just happy to play with the paper.

David's Big Fishing Adventure

August 2, 2009

Once again, I am waiting on David to type up something.

Mt. Fuji

July 25, 2009
Sorry, I am still Waiting on David to type this up.

Borne Lund

July 24, 2009
Today we went to Borne Lund. It is an indoor play area for kids. It was really neat there were many different play areas. There were the inflatable bounce things, hamster wheels (that were inflatable for the kids to get in), a ball pit with a ship in the middle to climb on, a baby area, and many more things. The kids enjoyed going there but you have to watch how long you are there or it can get expensive. It is 600 yen for kids and 300 yen for adults for the first 30 minutes after that it is 100 yen for every 10 minutes thereafter. It cost me 2000 yen for them to play today. Dawson really had a good time. Abigail did not like the balls but she enjoyed being able to walk around. We had a great time here are some sample pictures more will be on snapfish soon.

To the Beach

July 19, 2009
We thought today would be a good day to go to the beach. However, today is a Japanese Holiday and the beach was packed.
Dawson was so excited. When he got in the water some sea weed hit his foot. He said he did not like the grass but he liked the water. I love the way kids interpret things “grass”. Needless to say he spent the rest of his time playing in the sand.
Abby still does not know what to think about the water.

Dawson's 1st Day of School

July 14, 2009
Today was easier than I thought it would be for both of us. We met with Deana and Avery and walked to school. When we got there Dawson followed Avery in and put on his indoor shoes. At pick up he did well he was ready to go home. The teacher said he was trying to fall asleep while doing an activity. They tried to get him to lie down but he was not interested. All in all we had a good day.
Here is the web address for the school for anyone interested: http://www.tms-school.com/

Bay Stars Game

July 5, 2009
A guy David works with gave us tickets to see the local professional baseball team. The team name is the Yokohama Bay Stars. We had tickets to go back in June but it rained that day and we did not want to get the kids out. We had great seats. We were behind home plate in what they call the blue seats. Once again there were cheer leaders and a band. Japan really loves their baseball. David bought the kids plastic bats to beat together to help cheer on the home team.
Abby really enjoyed the game. She would not take her eyes off the field and she would bounce and dance around. Dawson liked the game but he lost interest quickly. He keep David busy going to the concession stands and just looking around.

One thing that really caught our attention is that they bring out their pitcher out to the field in a car. Yes, in a car.
We almost witnessed our first fight in Japan. Two guys just outside the stadium were arguing and started to push. David saw the police trying to get over there to break it up. Only bad thing is it was close to David and he had Abby.

When we were leaving the Bay Stars were outside letting people take pictures with them. So we go in line. Abby did not know what to think. She was too interested in looking at the stars.

Independence Day

July 4, 2009

We had the Brewers and the Ida’s over for a cook out. We had hot dogs and hamburgers. David grilled with a little assistance from Curtis. We had chips and dip, veggies and dip, brownies, peach cobbler and rice crispy treats. A feast for the hungry. Dawson and I made star shapped cookies and decorated them for the kids.

While we were eating Dawson went into the living room and fell asleep. The Brewers and Ida’s brought the fireworks and put on a nice show for us. Abby did not like the ones that made a loud bomb when they went off. She did not cry. She would jump and hold on for dear life.
Here is a picture of Dawson’s window where he was sleeping.

The whole group minus Dawson.

July 5, 2009
Dawson played with the sparklers that our guest left behind for him. Thank you for the sparklers.

China Town

June 20, 2009

We finally decided to venture into China Town. Word to the wise it is not stroller friendly. Most places have steps and/or upstairs with no elevators. So most of the day one of us would go into a place and look around but we did more window shopping than anything else.
I had hoped that we would eat there but David never stopped anywhere. This is partly due to the fact that one of the kids was asleep the whole time. Dawson slept more than Abby. He had fallen asleep on David’s shoulders and then we put him in Abby’s stroller. (Notice a pattern of my child falling asleep in funny places where most other people would not fall asleep.) He got to ride around in her pink stroller. We bought a few things but not much. We did get Abby a cute Asian style outfit.
This is a Tea Pot that you are not allowed to take a picture of (ops!! my bad!!).

Kamakura

June 19, 2009
We started our day at the Big Buddha. Dawson’s face was priceless when he first saw the Buddha. He was so excited and could not believe it was so big.

Dawson and I went inside the Buddha.

These are sandals made for the Buddha.

We washed our hands on the way out for good luck (I believe).

We toured the Gardens of Hasedera Temple most famous for its statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. You could spend a day looking around the gardens and looking at all the statues as you enter the grounds. Dawson and I walked up at first and then we came down to get David and Abby. We parked our stroller in the stroller parking and walked the many flights of stairs to view the temple. The temple is worth walking up all those steps. At the top there is a over look area looking out toward the ocean. There are places to eat and to set and rest. While resting these are some friends that Dawson and Abby made.

We then took the train to Enoshima Beach. We have been told that on a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji from here but we had a cloudy day. Maybe next time we go that way we will be able to view Mt Fuji. We had a lunch picnic on the beach where we almost lost our heads to a bird looking for food. Abby enjoyed putting her feet in the water. Dawson on the other had just wanted to play in the sand. He fell asleep on my back on the way to the train station. His new thing is to tell us his belly hurt because he wants us to carry him.
All together it was a great day long but good.

David’s B-Day & Nissan Baseball Game

June 12, 2009
Today Dawson and I baked David a cake. He helped crack the eggs (which ended up in the floor). He helped turn the mixer on and made sure it was mixing up the batter. Then he and Abby watched the cake bake (he pulled his stool over and sat down to watch it cook). We decorated the cake and were waiting on daddy to arrive home.
We got a call asking us to go to a baseball game. Nissan has a team and they were playing tonight. It was free so we went. It was a lot of fun and very loud. Believe it or not there were cheerleaders, a band, and the crowd really gets into the game. I felt like I was at a high school football game (or even a high school pep rally). Both of our kids fell asleep and someone came by and videoed them. No one could believe that they were asleep with all the noise.

I know that this picture is side ways but I will try to fix it later.

Happy Birthday David !!!!!
